I do have quite strong views on book awards. My view is that as a writer you should regard them entirely as ‘posh bingo’ and as utter luck and nothing more. And if you are a member of the judging panel you should regard them as the absolutely most objective and perfect example of literary decision-making there could possibly be. I also think that judges of literary prizes should make their decisions in private and then absolutely shut up and never talk about it. One of the things that mars the Booker Prize is judges earning themselves another hundred quid by writing a tell-all piece, which is inevitably hurtful to some writers. I don’t think they should even publish long-lists of books. I think they should publish a short list, and one winner and not comment on it. I think they should say ‘This is the best book, according to us. End of story.’
